Hiring a nanny or house help safely

You are inviting someone into your home and, often, trusting them with your children. Slow down the hire and the rest takes care of itself.
Before the interview
Write down the hours, duties, days off and pay before you talk to anyone. Vague terms are the single biggest source of conflict later.
Ask for a national ID and keep a copy, with the person's knowledge.
Questions worth asking
Ask about the last household they worked in, why they left, and what a normal day looked like there.
Ask scenario questions: what they would do if a child had a fever, or if a stranger came to the gate.
Ask about first-aid training and whether they can swim if you have a pool.
References and trial
Call two previous employers. Ask specifically whether they would rehire.
Run a paid trial week before committing. Be present for part of it.
Put the agreement in writing — hours, pay, leave, notice period — and give a copy to both sides.
